What is Gene Editing?

Gene editing is a method that allows scientists to change the DNA of several organisms, including plants, bacteria, animals, and humans. Editing DNA can lead to changes in physical traits, like eye color, and disease risk.

The first gene editing technologies were developed in the late 1900s. Scientists started with using Meganucleuses, then Zinc Finger Nucleuses, then TALEN. Most recently, a new gene-editing tool called CRISPR, invented in 2009, has made it simpler, faster, and cheaper to edit genomes (What is Genome). CRISPR is further discussed under the "CRISPR" tab!
